Journalism PgDip/MA: Events and lectures

Guest speakers

The Journalism department hosts weekly guest lectures and other events led by industry experts with a strong focus on developments in the fast-changing world of digital media. Recent guest speakers include:

  • Richard James, UK News Editor of BuzzFeed John Crowley, Wall Street Journal's Digital Editor for Europe;
  • Mukul Devichand, editor of BBC Trending site dedicated to exploring stories on social media;
  •  Guardian feature writer and interviewer Simon Hattenstone;
  • Independent producer and director James Jones, who has produced investigations for the BBC, Channel 4 and PBS Frontline;
  • Adrian Warner, veteran sports reporter and on-screen Olympics correspondent for the BBC for the last seven years;
  • Bill Schaumburg, Chief Economics correspondent at Reuters, UK;
  • Vanessa Baffoe, Kingston journalism graduate TV presenter, producer and video maker who helped to launch the Evening Standard's London Live local news channel;
  • Michelle Hather, deputy editor of Good Housekeeping;
  • David Lindsell, web editor for 10 Newsquest local websites including the Surrey Comet and Richmond and Twickenham Times;
  • Sunny Hundal, blogger, social media activist, author and Kingston's Publisher-in-Residence;
  • Samira Ahmed, broadcaster, former Channel 4 News presenter and Kingston's Visiting Professor in Media;
  • Jamal Osman, multi award-winning independent journalist and former Kingston MA graduate.

Events

We hold events on current affairs such as the recent panel discussion ‘Truth and Terror' examining the relationship between the Islamic State and the media and a live debate on the future of press regulation between Hacked Off and the Press Complaints Commission.

The department also hosts the annual Journalism Oscars to celebrate the brightest and best journalism students, with categories including news reporter, feature writer, digital journalist and postgraduate of the year. In 2015, the MA journalism students scooped the prize for Team of the Year for their work on the Kingston Courier.
