Journalism MFA: Course features

What this course offers you

If you choose to study this course, here are some of the things you can expect from the course and how it will benefit you.

  • This course is ideal if you want to prepare yourself for a career in journalism or PR public/media relations.
  • All our tutors are practising journalists with a wide range of experience in newspapers, magazines and online.
  • The course is split into Stage 1 (MA in Journalism or Magazine Journalism) and Stage 2 (MFA). The MA Journalism is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). The MA Magazine Journalism is recognised by the Periodical Training Council (PTC).
  • At Stage 1, all students complete a compulsory work placement with a professional journalism organisation, such as a newspaper, magazine, news agency, website, public relations agency or press office. We encourage students to arrange these for themselves, with some help from their tutors.
  • Stage 2 (the MFA) consists of a 40,000-word advanced dissertation. You benefit from one-to-one supervision from an experienced journalist and lecturer, backed by self-directed research and seminars.
  • You also have the opportunity to study for a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
  • Growing numbers of employers are demanding a postgraduate journalism qualification as evidence of commitment and ability with competition for the most sought after jobs fiercer than ever before.
  • The taught modules aim to prepare you for the job market. Alongside your journalism studies, you gain practical skills in:
    • data collation, review and synopsis;
    • communication (oral, written and electronic);
    • time management;
    • computing; and
    • co-operation and teamwork.
  • We offer a part-time study option to help you fit the course around other commitments.
