The range of events and lectures in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences enhances your studies and adds an extra perspective to your learning.

Cultural Intersections Symposium

The European Research Centre runs the annual Cultural Intersections Symposium. The topic for the 2008 Symposium will be 'Beyond Diasporas'. It will look at the cultural, social and political implications of diasporas (dispersed communities) within an interdisciplinary and international context, including:

• perceptions of 'beyond the diaspora';
• intergenerational differences among post-diasporic populations;
• ethnicity and post-diasporic experiences;
• issues in communication relating to post-diasporic experiences;
• 'beyond the diaspora' in literature, visual and digital art and cinema;
• material, spatial and visual trajectories/traces/sites of 'beyond diasporas';
• politics and post-diasporic experiences.

Conferences

Kingston University regularly hosts international conferences, such as:

• Issues of Community in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries;
• Successful Suburbs, Successful Cities; and
• Literary London.

Seminars and lectures

Our wide range of seminars and lectures includes:

• The Jon Lopategui Memorial Lectures – this annual lecture series has covered topics as varied as International Conflict and The Age of Spin; and
• The Vane Ivansovic Seminars and Lectures – addressing issues on the Balkans and the Near East.

Kingston Law School arranges regular guest lectures on topical subjects of interest throughout the year. Examples include:

• Penny McRedmond, member of the Steering Committee, Ireland En Route – 'Human Trafficking in Europe: The New Slave Trade;
• Dr Dermot Cahill of University College Dublin and editor of the Irish Journal of European Law – 'The Modernisation of EU Competition Law in the Enlarged European Union: Current Challenges';
• Damian Chalmers of the LSE and editor of European Law Review – 'European Markets and National Healthcare'; and 
• Professor Monty Raphael of Peters and Peters Solicitors, London, and visiting professor at Kingston Law School – 'Pursuing the Looters and Their Loot: Tracing Assets, Stolen or Received, Corruptly by Politically Exposed Persons, Family and Entourage'.

In addition to these ad hoc events, you can attend the Jean Monnet Lecture Programme. This is the high point of the European law-teaching year – a prestigious speaker addresses students and staff from the University, plus guests from the local legal community, on European integration. Past speakers have included:

• Professor Diamandouros, the European Ombudsman – 'Maladministration, the Courts and the Ombudsman';
• Professor Christopher McCrudden, Oxford University – 'Buying Social Justice: The Role of the European Union';
• Judge Wathelet, European Court of Justice, Luxembourg – 'The Lawyer and European Community Law'; and 
• Adam Tyson, Head of Unit Socio-Economic Questions, Media Relations and Speech-writing, Directorate-General Employment and Social Affairs, European Commission, Brussels – 'From the Four Freedoms to Fundamental Rights: What can the EU bring to the Debate on Equality?'

Our successful Strategy into Practice seminar series, which has been running for many years, is designed to give you the opportunity to gain experience of strategy within major enterprises. You will hear first-hand accounts, from top managers, on the management of complex international organisations, promoting innovation and creativity, instituting cultural change and managing growth.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions and to network after each session with academic staff and local business leaders. These seminars are open to external attendees, alumni and students.

At Kingston Law School we are committed to helping students, staff and alumni, as well as external organisations in the region, to develop their entrepreneurial potential. To achieve this we run a series of Entrepreneurship Experience seminars, bringing high profile guest speakers in to present on their personal experiences. We help people to improve their skills and learn how to develop opportunities into viable projects and enterprises.

Kingston Law School runs regular research seminars, which enable students and Law School staff to exchange ideas, research findings and test research papers with a view to obtaining helpful feedback and provide a vehicle for guest presentations

Throughout the year guest speakers from various institutions/businesses are invited in to present at special guest lectures and seminars. These are open to all Law School students.
