"I loved learning from lecturers who were also working as journalists in the national press. Producing Mouth with my peers offered real insight into what it takes to create a magazine." Taylor Anderson, Editorial Assistant at Cosmo Body magazine, Magazine Journalism MA graduate
Our Magazine Journalism MA prepares you to work in the magazine industry. It gets you ready for anything you might come across: from writing features for a women's weekly or putting together a news story for a trade publication to making a video or building a brand. It offers detailed, hands-on grounding in core journalistic skills, including feature writing, news gathering and writing, design, production and media law. Context is provided through the study of the business of magazines, ethics and journalistic practices. You can choose to study Teeline Shorthand as an optional extra.
You will benefit from the input of guest speakers from national magazines, newspapers and websites. Read more in the Events and lectures section.
You will work as part of an editorial team to produce a magazine across digital and print platforms. Mouth, the course magazine, is published and distributed on and around the campus, offering the valuable experience of making a publication for real readers. Mouth magazine was voted runner-up for Best Student Publication in the UK at the Guardian Student Media Awards 2011.
Our established and award-winning work placement programme offers you the support to find work experience at leading media organisations and national magazines. A full-time work placement officer is available to help with CVs and applications. All students undertake work placements as part of the course.
We have a successful partnership with leading UK media publisher Haymarket Network offering the opportunity to take part in an annual project, which may lead to employment. Thirteen of our graduates have secured paid work at Haymarket through the project. Read more in the Links with business and industry section.
