Computing and Information Systems
The School of Computing and Information Systems offers high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses, designed to reflect the developing needs of business and industry. Dr Miroslav Novak
Title: Principal lecturer and director of postgraduate programmes

Dr Novak is the director of postgraduate programmes for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing. He is responsible for the taught MSc degrees' quality; academic coherence; management; and operation.
Dr Novak has been teaching and researching in universities across Europe and Australia since the late '70s. By training a theoretical physicist, his work on the first supercomputer in the UK, the Cray 1S, introduced him to vector computation and led to a series of published papers. He has published 11 books and is the author of more than 40 research papers.
Dr Ron Malyan
Title: Reader

Specialist subjects: Dr Malyan designed and developed the Networking and Data Communications MSc in 1994 and has been its course leader ever since. He is also the module leader for:
- Digital Communications;
- Multimedia Communications;
- Wireless Communications; and
- Internet Wireless Networks.
Dr Malyan's initial training was in communications engineering during his 12 years in the Navy. He then spent 13 years in industry developing data networks. For the past 20 years, he has been an academic researching and teaching data communications.
Research fields: Ron is the research leader for the Networking and Communications Research Group. He has received research grants from:
- Fujitsu – for research into Turbo Codes; and
- Symbian – for the implementation of IPv6 in mobile devices.
Dr Malyan's current research concerns the development of 'always best connected' services for heterogeneous wireless access networks. He has authored 30 conference and journal papers.
