Current research in this subject
The team at Kingston includes staff from both the Business School and the Psychology Department in the Faculty of Social Science. Many are also members of the Occupational Psychology/Organisational Behaviour (OBOP) research group. Together their research covers many areas of leadership, personality, diversity, staff motivation and development, decision making and organisational change.
Psychology research
Many of our staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.
The Psychology Research Unit (PRU) at Kingston is organised into two main research groups. Each group provides a framework for research collaboration and the exchange of research ideas:
The PRU is equipped with a wide-range of state-of-the-art specialist equipment, software and psychometric tools. It has extensive links with local schools and external organisations for conducting applied research. The PRU runs a series of seminars in which eminent researchers from across the UK present findings from the latest, cutting-edge research in psychology. New purpose-built laboratories will be available for postgraduate students in psychology.
Business research
Research is an essential part of the day-to-day life of Kingston Business School and is embedded in its intellectual activities and development. In the most recent RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) undertaken in 2008, the research output of Kingston Business School was the highest rated of any new university. Ninety per cent of our research submitted was assessed as ‘recognised internationally' or higher. Of this, 10% was classified as ‘world leading' and 35% as ‘internationally excellent'.
We have a vibrant research community engaging staff, research students and associates from government, industry and commerce, in a wide variety of endeavours from definitive pioneering academic research to highly focused consultancy for clients.
The excellent quality of our research is reflected in the international reputation of our professors and lecturers through publications and prize-winning conference papers, as well as substantial external funding from both the private and public sector, including HSBC Bank, Nokia, and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Research activity is undertaken at three levels:
- Research centres – such as the Small Business Research Centre (SBRC) and Centre Research in Employability, Skills & Society (CRESS).
- Research groups – such as the Employee Engagement Consortium and the Emerging Technologies Group.
- Individual department level, with numerous research and interest groups between academics.
