Primary Teaching leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) PGCE: Entry requirements

What you need to apply for this course

Typical offer

  • A minimum 2:2 honours degree in any subject.
  • GCSE (A*–C): English Language, Mathematics and Science. (Equivalency tests will be considered from recognised institutions if GCSEs are not held. However, you will need to show on your application that you will obtain these qualifications before the course begins in September).

NB: NARIC must be provided for overseas qualification to show comparability.
  • Proficiency in chosen language if applicable.

Note that you apply through UCAS Teacher Training for this course.

Experience of a primary setting

In order to ensure that their decision is informed and has been carefully considered, and to demonstrate a commitment to teaching, it is desirable for candidates to have spent some time visiting a primary classroom to become familiar with the demands and expectations of primary teaching. A minimum of two weeks in a primary setting will be a requirement prior to commencement of the course.

Skills tests

Applicants starting initial teacher training courses from September 2013 need to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Skills tests before starting their course to ensure they can be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

You may book your skills tests as soon as you have made an application via UCAS Teacher Training. Applicants who have already passed their skills tests at the time of interview will be looked upon favourably. Find out more.
