Social Work PgDip/MSW: Course features
What this course offers you
- The Social Work course is designed for social science graduates who want to gain a professional qualification in social work. The course includes three practice placements totalling 200 days over two years.
- You can choose to study for a PgDip or Master of Social Work (MSW) award. The MSW is a professional qualification in social work, which is accredited by the General Social Care Council (GSCC) and provides eligibility for entry onto the GSCC register of social workers.
- You also work towards meeting the requirements of the six Key Roles of Social Workers, which are set out in the National Occupational Standards for Social Work, and complete the European Computer Driving Licence. This is needed to pass a social work qualification.
- Our close links with key stakeholders mean you have the chance to:
- shadow experienced social workers;
- make observation visits; and
- undertake practical placements.
- If you choose the MSW award, the research dissertation/practice project gives you the chance to further specialise in an area of interest.
- As well as developing your understanding of your specialist area, this course will make sure you:
- keep up to date with recent developments, legal requirements and ethically-sound practice;
- develop your judgement and decision-making skills;
- improve your networking and communication skills; and
- gain skills in managing others.
- Many teaching staff are research active, which keeps your learning cutting-edge, and others are expert practitioners. This combination of academics and practitioners provides a uniquely dynamic environment. Read more in our Research areas and Links with practitioners sections.
- The Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences is a unique partnership between Kingston University and St George's, University of London. This means that you benefit from the expertise and facilities of two complementary institutions:
