The biggest barrier to sustainability is the word itself. 'Sustainable' is an empty term, attached to anything with good intentions. It is often used, but rarely justified. We make token gestures based on partial views of sustainability, but these don't yet combine into a meaningful whole.
A holistic understanding of sustainability is the goal of students on Sustainable Design MA at Kingston University. This interdisciplinary course focuses on the power of design to address contemporary social and ecological concerns. The roots of unsustainability are often deeply embedded. We must not simply design new products, but a new culture of sustainability. We need to look at sustainability more clearly – partial views are not enough.
