Wireless Communications MSc: What our students say

Student profiles

We don't currently have any student profiles for this course. However, in the meantime you can read about Arvind, who completed his Networking and Data Communications MSc in 2009. Here he shares his experience of Kingston University and deciding to stay on in the Faculty to do a PhD with the Wireless Multimedia and Networking Research Group (read more about the group on the Research areas page).

Arvind Ramrekha

Name: Arvind Ramrekha
Course: Networking and Data Communications MSc

"After completing my first degree in Computer Engineering at Delhi University, I went back to Mauritius and worked in industry, specialising in Oracle.

"I was particularly interested in networking and decided to take a masters course. I looked at several universities in Australia and the UK, before deciding to apply to Kingston. The costs seemed reasonable and the University's reputation for excellence in computing was reassuring – from its website I found out about research in digital imaging and other areas.

"The quick and efficient way they answered my queries was also important – even from so far away I built up a personal relationship with the admissions team and felt I would be treated like an individual when I arrived, which I was. Staff met me at the airport and took us on a trip around London – they did everything they could to make me welcome.

"I studied for an MSc in Networking and Data Communications. Kingston has good links with industry and we met external engineers and researchers who gave us a good insight into the latest developments.

"I had intended to get some work experience in the UK after my MSc, but I did well in my studies [Arvind won prizes for his project and overall academic excellence] and my supervisor suggested I think about staying on for a PhD. I wasn't sure about it at first but, after talking to some of the other research students, I decided to apply for a project with established funding – these are shown on the website and are very competitive!

"The research department has won several big projects recently, including the one I'm working on (peer-to-peer network connectivity in disaster and emergency situations, funded by the European Union). Many of the Faculty staff are research active, well known and respected in their fields and much of our research is internationally acclaimed.

"I'm very pleased I stayed on. I'm learning a lot – everything changes so quickly – and I know I'll have several career options when I finish. Living in Kingston is great too; it's a relaxed, friendly and safe student town which is very close to the buzz of central London."
