Computing and Information Systems
The School of Computing and Information Systems offers high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses, designed to reflect the developing needs of business and industry. Our courses cover the range of modern technologies in computer science, information systems and software engineering, with specialisations in games technology; network and wireless technologies; information security; electronic business; and embedded systems.

Dr Maria Martini
Title: Senior lecturer and joint co-ordinator of the Wireless Multimedia Networking Research Group

Background: Dr Martini received the Laurea in Electronic Engineering from the University of Perugia, Italy in 1998, followed by a PhD in Electronics and Computer Science from the University of Bologna, Italy in 2002. Between 1998 and 2003 she was with DEIS, University of Bologna and was with the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT) in Italy from 2004 to 2007. She has been a key player in various national and international projects, such as the JSCC project (with Philips Research) and the JOCO and PHOENIX European IST projects, in the latter leading the crucial tasks on the cross-layer system controller and on the software demonstrator.
Specialist subjects: Dr Martini is currently leading the Kingston University team in the ICT-OPTIMIX European project. She is a reviewer for international journals and has been on the organising and programme committees of several international conferences, including general co-chair of the ICST/ACM MOBIMEDIA 2009 conference. She is co-ordinating the edition of the Strategic Applications Agenda on mobile health and inclusion applications in the eMobility European Technology Platform.
Research fields: Her research interests include wireless multimedia networks, cross-layer design, joint source and channel coding, error resilient video, video quality assessment and medical applications. She is the author of a number of scientific articles published in leading international journals and conferences, and the inventor of several patents on wireless video.
Dr Christos Politis
Title: Reader (Associate Professor) in Wireless Communications

Background: Christos was born in Athens, Greece; and holds a PhD and MSc from the University of Surrey, UK and a BEng from the Technical University of Athens, Greece. He leads a research team on Wireless Multimedia and Networking (WMN), and teaches modules related to communications. He is the field leader for the Wireless Communications MSc and Networking and Data Communications MSc courses at Kingston.
Prior to this post, he was the research and development project manager at Ofcom, the UK Regulator and Competition Authority. There he managed a number of projects across a wide range of technical areas, including cognitive radio, polite protocols, radar, LE applications, fixed wireless and mobile technologies.
Christos' previous positions include telecommunications engineer with Intracom Telecom in Athens and, for many years, post-doc research fellow in the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR) at the University of Surrey, UK.
Research fields: Christos has been active with European research since 2000, and has participated in several EU, national and international projects. He was the initiator and project manager of the IST UNITE project. He is a patent holder, and has published more than 100 papers in international journals and conferences and chapters in two books. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of Technical Chamber of Greece.
