Choose Kingston's Media Practice MA

This degree prepares you for roles across such sectors as digital advertising, new documentary, digital research and practice. You will gain hands-on experience in designing, creating, producing and exploring current cultural issues and developments in the media industry. On graduation you will be in a position to set up your own independent practice, join an established business or organisation and/or undertake practice-based research.

This programme and team are part of Digital Media Kingston.

What will you study?

The course approaches new media production from at least three vantage points, defined broadly as ’applied’, ‘cultural’ and ‘analytical-theoretical’. The focus of your work will depend on the clusters of options you choose to take – current routes include interactive/digital advertising and promotion; new documentary; and creative digital practice.

Students will:

  • develop a portfolio of work and examine institutions, technologies, forms and meanings of media practice, including independent practice;
  • become familiar with key theoretical and aesthetic concepts developed through practical work and analytical assessments;
  • become critically aware of the cultural issues of inter-media art practices and creative research; and
  • work on advanced production projects, including music videos, motion graphic pieces, interactive ads and creative digital installations.

The current theoretical and cultural context of creative media requires an understanding of new developments of form, such as ‘interactive branding’, user-generated content and social networking media. Students of the Media Practice MA will be equipped to understand these shifting forms. Applied practice and comparisons between traditional communications agency and independent approaches will be examined.
