Overview

Before joining Kingston University, Mark Farmer had a background as a pay consultant in the city, giving advice to companies about remuneration packages. He is therefore well-placed to comment on news stories concerned with pay packages for chief executives at a time when salaries and benefits for Britain's top bosses has enraged the public and angered shareholders.

Indeed research Mark has carried out for his PhD into corporate performace and CEO pay in the UK saw him spend most of a year trawling through the remuneration packages of some of the country's largest non-financial businesses.

His findings overturned previous studies showing that chief executives' pay was largely linked to the size of the company they managed. "It might not be a popular conclusion but, based on my data, chief executives are receiving rewards based on their actual performance," he said.

Mark graduated from Coventry University with a BEng in Manufacturing and Business, has an MA in International Finance and an MSc in Management and Business. His background in reward management saw him give remuneration advice to a number of City clients. He is interested in executive pay disclosure regulations and more generally the disclosure of other accounting information.
