Overview

Stella Sandford is a Principal Lecturer in Modern European Philosophy, based in the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy at Kingston University.

The CRMEP is the leading centre for postgraduate level study and doctoral research in Continental Philosophy in the London area. Since its inception in 1994 it has developed a national and international reputation for teaching, research and publication in the field of post-Kantian European philosophy, characterised by a strong emphasis on broad cultural and intellectual contexts and a distinctive sense of social and political engagement. The CRMEP moved to Kingston University from Middlesex University in the summer of 2010 and sits across the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and Art, Design and Architecture (FADA).

Stella teaches widely in Modern European Philosophy and specialises in contemporary philosophy of sex and gender - the philosophical investigation of the meaning of sex difference. Connected to this, she has a particular interest in the work of the French philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir and the history of radical feminist theory, recently co-editing a collection of essays on Shulamith Firestone. She is a long-standing member of the editorial collective of the bimonthly British journal Radical Philosophy and a member of the executive committee of the UK Society for Women in Philosophy.
