Overview
Poet Siobhán Campbell was born in Dublin, and is a graduate of University College, Dublin. She spent a number of years in New York and San Francisco and worked as Managing Editor of Wolfhound Press before joining Kingston University where she is a principal lecturer in the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing. Widely published in the USA and UK, she is the recipient of awards in the National Poetry Competition as well as citations in the Michael Marks, Wigtown International and Troubadour poetry awards.
She is currently supervising PhDs in creative writing and English literature including work on dialectology, poetry as testimony and contemporary approaches to Ekphrasis.
Most recently she has been working alongside the Military Writing Network, in an initiative which has brought together several organisations and individuals who seek to encourage, develop and value creative writing by veterans, ex-combatants, currently serving personnel and their families.
Said Siobhan: "For centuries, soldiers have used poetry and prose to describe the horrors of war. The celebrated First World War poets - Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Rupert Brooke - famously wrote powerful verses which still resonate today. But nowadays we seldom see literary works about more modern conflicts, such as Afghanistan, Iraq or the Falklands, written by those involved."
Now a unique competition organised by Kingston University and the Military Writers Network aims to change all that, and has found some of the best modern forces poets and authors. Several hundred members of the armed forces, their families and friends submitted their poetry and prose to take part in the "Forces Stories and Poems" competition, which was held in May 2011 and marked the 125th anniversary of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help. Siobhan is now working with MWN writers to produce a public archive of this important work.
