Overview
Dr Nikcevic is a practising psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council, chartered health psychologist of the British Psychology Society, as well as an accredited Cognitive Behaviour therapist. Her research interests include: psychological aspects of pregnancy and pregnancy loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, termination of pregnancy), development of interventions to enhance psychological well-being during and after pregnancy, and following traumatic pregnancy-related events. She is also interested in the psychological impact of reproductive technologies on women and their partners (pregnancy scanning, antenatal testing). More recently she has initiated a project examining the psychological processes involved in the maintenance of smoking behaviour.
Her work as a cognitive behaviour therapist sees her deal with adults with a range of psychological issues, such as depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia, eating disorders. CBT is a form of therapy that is based on concepts and principles derived from psychological models of human emotions and behaviour. At times of distress, people often start to think differently about themselves; their thoughts and behaviour can become extreme and unhelpful. This can worsen how a person feels. The aim of CBT is to identify and change such unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving. In doing this, the result is often a major improvement in how a person feels and lives.
