Overview

Prof Blackburn is the director of research at Kingston's prestigious Business School. His status as one of the UK's leading small business researchers was recognised when he was appointed to the RAE Panel 2008. The Research Assessment Exercise is a formalised assessment process designed to scrutinise the quality of research undertaken in the HE sector. He has an extensive research portfolio which spans  academic organisations (eg Economic & Social Research Council) through to public (eg HM Treasury; EU Commission) and private businesses (eg HSBC).  Editor of the International Small Business Journal, he combines his academic research whilst teaching postgraduate students.  Prof Blackburn has published a vast amount of papers in his field and has been a guest on BBC Radio 4's "Shop Talk" programme.

Academic Accolades

In 2011 a paper he co-authored with Kingston's Tom Wainwright won an award at the annual Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship conference. The paper, 'Who are you calling old?: Revisiting notions of age and ability amongst older entrepreneurs' won the 'Business creation, resource acquisition, business closure' track/category.
