Overview

Professor Sarah Sayce is a chartered surveyor by profession. After spending some years in practice as a valuer and commercial property manager she became an academic  and is now head of the university's School of Surveying and Planning, a position she has held since the early 1990s. She undertook a PhD investigating the emergence of the new leisure property sector as an institutional investment vehicle. Her PhD then led to her being a founder member and instigator of the successful industry group the Leisure Property Forum, of which she is still a member. She has also developed an extensive research portfolio based on the operation of the commercial property markets, including the rise of the sustainability agenda as it impacts on, and influences, property appraisal.

She has written many conference papers and is widely published. The research-led book Building Sustainability in the Balance, for which she was lead author, was published in 2004 and is believed to be the first book on sustainable property published by the Estates Gazette. Her latest book,  Real Estate Appraisal: From Value to Worth, was published in May 2006.

Sarah led the bid writing team that developed C-SCAIPE  - the university's Centre  for Sustainable Communities Achieved Through Integrated Professional Education - which opened in 2007 and is used by all university staff for discussions and learning on aspects of sustainability. She is now Chair of the Centre, working closely with its two Directors.

In addition to her roles within C-SCAIPE and the School, Sarah is also active within the surveying profession. She is an APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) Chairman and has been an elected member of both the South East Regional Board and the International Governing Council of RICS (the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
