Overview

Professor Humphreys is a Professor of Law and head of Kingston University's Law school. His research field is European environmental law, with a particular interest in aspects of social justice developed from the sustainable development principle. He is most interested in the European Union Law requirement that environmental protection be integrated in all aspects of union policy. His interest further extends to sustainability and urban regeneration, but starting from the premise that progress in these areas is based on the principle that sustainability and sustainable development is primarily about people.

To this end he is chair of the EC1 New Deal for Communities partnership, a £53 million government-funded urban regeneration project designed to kick-start the turnaround of a neighbourhood comprising around 4,800 households and their surrounding areas within the London Borough of Islington.
