Research and Innovation Support Office

The Research and Innovation Support Office (RISO) is a central university department.

The RISO:

  • supports the development and implementation of the University's research strategy;
  • is responsible for co-ordinating the University's submission to the Research Excellence Framework;
  • supports the work of the University Research Committee and its sub-committees, including the University Research Ethics Committee; and provides support to academics involved in externally funded research.

The RISO works closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Martin McQuillan.

Betty Warnock, director of the Research and Innovation Support Office

  • Has overall responsibility for the Research and Innovation Support Office, including the Graduate Research School.
  • Works closely with the PVC for Research and Enterprise and faculty research directors in the development and delivery of the University's research strategy.
  • Particular responsibility for co-ordinating the University's submission to the Research Excellence Framework, for QR funding, the annual monitoring of research activity, and for supporting the work of the Research Committee.

More about the research development manager's role:

  • Provide advice on all research grant stages, from identification of a funding opportunity to project completion.
  • Support the development and submission of research proposals and budgets according to funder and university procedures, advising on content, quality and assisting with writing, where appropriate.
  • Provide assistance, training and signposting in relation to research income generation.
  • Support the Faculty to integrate University research strategy and new strategic approaches to research income generation.
  • Produce research application and award statistics for reports and presentations.
  • Liaise with Faculty research support and Research& Enterprise Finance, forming integrated teams.
