Research project: Cardiac Risk Perceptions and Preventive Health Behaviours among Young Adults in Greece

Abstract

Heart disease has been identified as the leading cause of death worldwide and, despite advances in medical science and technology, appropriate preventive actions do not seem to be adopted consistently and effectively. Additionally, cardiovascular diseases have become a major health concern among much younger age groups in recent years. This research aims to investigate the cardiac risk perceptions of young adults in Greece, how these can inform preventive behaviours, and what might promote or compromise the development and maintenance of realistic risk perceptions and their translation into effective risk reduction behaviours. The project will address a gap in research literature concerning cardiac disease prevention in Greece where public awareness, and especially young people's knowledge, of cardiac risk is very low and prevention is shaped by diverse understandings of necessity and effectiveness.
