"When truly present in nature, we do use all our senses at the same time, which is the optimum state of learning." Richard Louv, The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder.
An offshoot of the growing appreciation of the value of learning outside the classroom, Beach School has been developed with the same ethos as Forest School, where children are encouraged to relate to the natural environment in a variety of ways, which include art, science, maths, history and literacy. Beach School encourages children to consider and manage risk and to develop their resilience and immerse themselves in the natural world.
Beach School offers the opportunity to explore the beach and shallows of the sea as a habitat for a variety of creatures and plants. Children look at the natural and made elements which make up a beach, and learn skills such as building a fire and putting up a shelter. This is a cross-curricular course.
The course will take place on a beach. Due to the outdoor nature of this course, a second date will be arranged in case of heavy rain on the first date.
There will be handouts on the species which may be found at the beach, as wells as ways of explaining the cause and occurrence of the tides. Participants will be encouraged to record the different activities. At the end of the day, there will be an opportunity to explore the learning and cross-curricular possibilities which have arisen during the day.
The fee for this course has been reduced to reflect the fact that participants will need to buy a train ticket to get to the South Coast.
There are no further discounts available on this course.
