Why do this course?

This short course is aimed at teachers and SENCOs working in mainstream, special schools and colleges as well as those working in specialist settings for children and young people from early years to 25 years of age.

A survey of teachers in 2013 found that 60 per cent believe they haven't had the training they need to teach pupils on the autism spectrum (NASUWT Support for Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs, June 2013).

Course description

In the context of this training, participants will learn about:

  • a range of pedagogic approaches for creating an autism-friendly environment;
  • reasonable adjustments for children in the autism spectrum condition and the legal aspects of provision;
  • working inter-professionally with relevant services in the context of the local offer; and
  • creating effective relationships with parents/carers to achieve a holistic provision.

Course structure

The course will use the form of a workshop with use of discussion, multimedia, handouts. Networking will be encouraged for knowledge exchange.

What will you take away?

  • Knowledge and understanding about complex issues surrounding work with children on the autism spectrum and handouts.
  • Knowledge exchange and liaison and networking with other professionals from other contexts; certificate of attendance.
