Course information

Why do this course?

This week-long course is aimed at those who would like to apply for work in television art departments, but who lack the technical skills required whilst having a solid creative portfolio, or for those wishing to update their skills.

Course description

Participants will be taken through an elementary design process beginning with a site survey of a particular location on campus. Using the information gathered they will produce a 1:50 technical drawing for a set related to the location and will produce a white card model of this design.

Course structure

  • Day 1 – You will learn about designing for the studio in television, how to use drawing equipment and how to draw using a scale ruler. Time will then be spent surveying a space in the University which will be the basis for your drawing.
  • Day 2 – Converting your survey drawing into a measured ground plan, you will learn how to lay out a technical drawing for both a contractor, and the studio, and learn the technical terms used when drafting a plan for television.
  • Day 3 – You will create elevations using the ground plan and the information gathered in the survey. You will come to understand the necessity for accuracy in your drawings and for competent research gathering when undertaking a survey.
  • Day 4 – Will introduce you to the techniques of model making. Using the ground plan and elevations to create a three-dimensional card model of the college space you surveyed.
  • Day 5 – Spent finishing off the model and drawings. In the afternoon there will be a group critique where all course delegates will present their work.
