Maths and Art in the Primary School Short Course

Please contact us for future course dates.

Course information

Why do this course?

This course will give you the opportunity to explore the strong links between maths and visual art, and address ways in which you can embed these in your primary curriculum. We will look at paintings and sculptures by artists whose work relates to maths, and in the practical activities, we will use a range of media, in 2 and 3 dimensions. The course will also highlight the value for children in working collaboratively.

Course description

A range of maths concepts will inform art activities, offering an engaging way in to maths for children who may struggle, and a challenge for others to give their abstract mathematical understanding a visual form. You will also be able to extend your subject knowledge of a range of visual artists' work, and find out about galleries you can take your class to for a maths lesson, and websites which will keep you up to date with the latest maths/art ideas and activities.

What will you take away?

Participants will receive a handout detailing:

  • art techniques and methods which have been explored in the course
  • artists whose work links to maths
  • details of useful galleries and websites to support your work in school on maths and art.
