Why do this course?

Through this very interactive course, you'll explore challenging issues in safeguarding practice in educational settings. You'll also gain in-depth understanding of the range of factors affecting how teachers and educational practitioners engage, behave, lead and manage in pressured and emotive situations. You'll be able to use your new knowledge to implement strategies in your own schools and settings to safeguard children, staff and other stakeholders. You'll benefit from an opportunity to engage in discussions with practitioners, teachers, leaders and managers exploring some of the more difficult and complex matters that arise in real practice situations.

Course description

Your course will cover:

  • the identities of professionals involved in safeguarding including values, beliefs, attitudes and dispositions;
  • managing relationships with people with differing personalities;
  • developing effective communication techniques in handling challenging circumstances;
  • understanding the power dynamics in relationships including knowing where the balance of power lies and aligning this with professional responsibilities;
  • an understanding of the thresholds and perceptions of ‘risk';
  • understanding rights frameworks and the interface between policy, professional expectations and practice; and
  • developing a positive whole-school culture that mitigates fears around safeguarding and prevent.

The course will include the following features:

  • research-based learning from primary research by our academics in the School of Education; and
  • interactive teaching and learning methods including scenario simulation and facilitator/peer feedback to help you in your own development as a safeguarding and prevent leader.

Course structure

The course is run over one and a half days:

  • Day one begins at 1.00pm and finishes at 5.00pm followed by an evening meal from 5.30pm 8.00pm.
  • Day two is a full day from 9.00am until 5.00pm and includes lunch.

Handouts related to some of the models discussed on the two days.


Participants in this course will need to be familiar with Keeping Children Safe in Education (2016) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2015).
