Why do this course?

This course is for primary school teachers from NQT onwards or education staff teaching a modern foreign language in a primary school. There is no prerequisite with regard to language proficiency as the emphasis will be on pedagogy, but it may be of particular value to those wishing to refresh their knowledge of French.

The eight-week option offers an additional two weeks focusing on upskilling your French language skills.

Course description

This practical short course is designed for teaching staff, NQTs or those interested in developing their knowledge of how to teach primary languages in school. Knowledge of a specific language is not required as the strategies taught can be applied to all language teaching. Whilst there is no prerequisite with regard to language proficiency there is the additional two weeks extra with the eight-week option, which supports anyone interested in upskilling their French language skills.

Course structure

  • Week 1: The use of visuals to teach language items.
  • Week 2: Planning for pupil progress in language learning.
  • Week 3: Embedding Primary Languages in the curriculum.
  • Week 4: Teaching children about other cultures or Intercultural Understanding.
  • Week 5: How to use the target language effectively.
  • Week 6: How to revisit language through games, songs and story-telling.

Final two sessions are only to be attended if taking the 8 week option:

  • Weeks 7 and 8: Upskilling – French for the classroom. Suitable for beginners and those with "a rusty" GCSE.

Prerequisites

Basic level of language as the course is aimed at providing pedagogical teaching and learning strategies.
