This course is for primary teachers and will explore the therapeutic value of art, and offer media, techniques and ideas which encourage well being and self-affirmation through making. Some children find art difficult or demoralising, as art activities often focus on drawing, painting and individual work. There is also often a focus on the finished product which can be stressful for children.
Ways of making art which are fulfilling and calming will be considered, as well as the importance of a broad and balanced art curriculum which provides a range of ways of working in different media. The social and artistic benefits of collaboration will be emphasised, and we will look at the work of artists for whom art making is an explicitly therapeutic activity.
The course will combine theory with practical art activities which have therapeutic value. There will be opportunities to collaborate, as well as working on your own, and there will be time to consider how you might introduce such activities into your curriculum.
The course will take place over one day and will comprise presentations, practical art activities and discussions.
There will be a handout outlining the different techniques and activities used.
Aprons are provided, but we will be using paint and clay, so dress accordingly. Long nails are not advisable!
