Dr Helen Wickstead

Helen Wickstead is Course Director of the MA Museum and Gallery Studies. Helen has worked as an archaeologist and museum professional in the UK, France, Czech Republic, Turkey and Sudan. She was awarded her doctorate from University College London in 2008. She has written widely on prehistoric archaeology, histories of archaeology, heritage and the relationships between archaeology and contemporary art. She has directed excavations at nationally important archaeological monuments, co-ordinated art residency programmes at Stonehenge, and developed temporary exhibitions on archaeological themes for a range of museums and galleries. Her publications include A Spectacular History of Survey by Flying Machine!, (2012), Concrete Prehistories: Making Modern Monuments (2015), and The Wild Worship of a Lost and Buried Past (2017). She is currently working on a book entitled 'Phallus: A History of Archaeology and Sex' which develops on her Wellcome Trust funded research into prehistoric phalli in national and regional museum collections.
