Dr Martin Colbert

About

I completed my education at Ergonomics Unit, University College London, in 1986, and then spent the first decade of my career there, working as a contract research associate. My research projects covered all aspects of Human Computer Interaction - from development methods for expert systems and Windows 3 desk-top videophones to interactive television and design patterns for naval command and control. We won funding from sponsors throughout UK and Europe.

I joined the full-time academic staff at Kingston University in 1998, establishing the usability lab (2006) and MSc User Interaction Design (with Management Studies) in collaboration with FASS and B&L (2007) renamed MSc User Experience Design in 2010. My research interests include diary studies of mobile user behaviour, particularly rendezvousing, and traffic studies of on-line advertising, sponsored in part by Google (2011). I now study visualisation and contemporary developments in Ux Methods, such as Big Data in .

I have conducted commercial work throughout my career, including for Oracle, Department of Work and Pensions, and local businesses such as Worldwide Aviation (AVBuyer.com), Infoshare (data quality) and HumanKind Technologies (the Goozby app).

Research

My early research interests were shaped by Prof John Long's Human-Computer Interaction research group at UCL, where I was introduced to emerging subjects like WIMPed up user interfaces, and user-centered methodologies for analysis, design and evaluation of desktop applications, and "Expert Systems".  I was too late to invent the surf board, but I was amongst the first to think "Those kids look cool!".  Moving to KU, I conducted research more independently and rode the big wave that was the mobile web.  Projects included diary studies of mobile user behaviour, particularly rendezvousing, and traffic studies of on-line advertising.  For some years research took a back seat, as I led ever-more popular courses in MSc Interaction Design and then MSc User Experience Design.  But I was lucky to supervise some gifted research students, and explored with them topics such as user journeys, security behaviour and the optimisation of radiology workflows.  More recently, swell over, I am riding visualisation for AI - as fascinating now as it was in the 80s!   During Covid, I also revisited my UCL work in Interactive TV for Education from 90s - I had no idea how much I would help the future me!
