Mr Bruno Silvestre

Senior Lecturer

About

I studied Architecture at the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, where I graduated in 2000. Prior to setting up my own practice in 2010, I worked for Pedro Mauricio Borges and Manuel Graça Dias + Egas Vieira in Lisbon before joining Henley Hale-Brown in London in 2003. In parallel with these collaborations I have developed architectural work independently since graduation. In 2010 I founded brunosilvestreARCHITECTURE, a practice currently involved in projects in UK and Portugal. In 2013 the practice saw its work commended on several occasions. A house in Sintra, Portugal was shortlisted for the RIBA EU Awards 2013. This project was also selected for the Lisbon Architecture Trienalle in September 2013, exhibited in the format of a short documentary that formed part of an exhibition featuring the work of a selection of young Portuguese and Spanish architects. In July 2013 the practice won an international architectural competition for the Alvenaria Social Housing scheme in Lisbon, comprising 460 homes. I have taught since 2007 and have been a guest critic at various schools of architecture in United Kingdom and Portugal. My teaching interests revolve around the potential for architecture to bear poetic qualities in the relationship with its own topographical context and the role of architecture as a form of cultural expression. In parallel with teaching and professional practice, I have also developed research in areas related to architectural education and design studio teaching. I have written several papers and presented the work of my design studios in international conferences in the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal.
