About

I received my PhD in Economics from the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex in 2006. During the final year of my PhD, I took up a research post (Research Fellow in Applied Economics) at the University of Warwick. In 2007, I joined Loughborough University as a Lecturer in Business Economics. I was then promoted to Senior Lecturer and Reader in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

Since 2012, I am a Research Professor of Small Business and Entrepreneurship at Kingston Business School. I am also an Honorary Professor at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago and I have also been a Visiting International Scholar at Brock University in Canada, Temporary Academic Visitor at IAE Lyon School of Management and Visiting Professor at University of North Carolina in the USA.

My research focuses on the econometric analysis of cross-sectional, time-series and panel data related to entrepreneurship, small businesses and illicit behaviour.

My research has been presented at various international conferences for which I have won a number of best conference paper awards, the Scottish Enterprise award and I have performed the duties of chair and/or discussant at many of these conferences. In 2016, I was the keynote speaker at the European Conference on Research Methodology for Business and Management Studies and the 13th Convention International Community of Banyakigezi.

I have received research income from external contracts with major funders such as the European Union (EU) Leonardo da Vinci programme, the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), the British Academy, Barclays Bank, Legal Services Board (LSB) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).

I was the Director of the PhD programme (Business) at the Loughborough University School of Business and Economics from 2011-2012, and I am currently the Director of Doctoral programmes, and the Director of the Centre for Research in Employment, Skills and Society (CRESS). From August 2017 I am leading the Global Entrepreneurship Development Centre (GEDC).

I lectured undergraduate modules in Business Economics at Loughborough University School of Business and Economics during the period 2007-2012. I also taught Research and Industry at the Loughborough doctoral training programme in 2011. Moreover, I visited WBS during the autumn terms from 2009-2011 to teach Economics for Management and Business postgraduate students. In my early career I held teaching assistant posts in economics/econometrics at the Warwick, Essex and Leicester Economics Departments.

At Kingston University, I regularly teach panel data, time-series analysis and research methodology for postgraduate students.

Recently I have taught at University of North Carolina and Jean Moulin University in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship in times of crisis.
