Professor James Orwell

Professor of Computer Science

About

I'm a Professor of Computer Science with significant industry experience, with contributions to signal processing theory (e.g. CVPR, ICPR) and deploying this research in real-world scenarios (airports, paralympics, saleable products), which has led to a succession of enterprise and knowledge transfer activities, both within and in addition to the computer vision domain. Creator of hackathons for student employability & social engagement. I've made some media appearances, e.g. BBC Horizon and Radio 4.

(First degree in Physics & Philosophy (Oxon) then Physics PhD with the Image Processing Group in King's College London. Thereafter, member of Computer Science School (in its various guises) at Kingston University.)

Research

My main research interest concerns the processing of video signals to extract different types of information, such as the location, category and identity of objects in the scene. This discipline is underpinned by probability and information theory: the signals contain information which the processing can (partially) extract.

Although most of my publications invariably focus on the processing method details, which are the main research community interest, I also address that fundamental aspect of the field. In several papers (Orwell & Plumbley (1999), Pedagadi et al (2013), Mallah et al (2013), Wang et al (2013)) I contribute to the understanding of how general notions of probability and uncertainty relate to method-specific results.

An important application domain of this video signal processing is CCTV, e.g. in streets, airports and railway stations. My work has focused on the detection, tracking and re-identification of pedestrians (with also some work on vehicles). Working with my PhD student, Sateesh Pedagadi, we have three papers reporting novel methods that achieve state-of-the-art results (one currently under review). Two address the re-identification problem: estimating which observations refer to the same individual. These use 'metric learning' techniques to transform the feature space into one in which observations from the same individual tend to be closely located.

Since 2002 I have also been applying these signal processing techniques to the sports domain, most notably football. I was principle investigator for the INMOVE European project, aiming to transmit animated positions of football players to mobile phones. I have transferred this knowledge into tracking of Wheelchair athletes for the 2012 Paralympics. All this extracted information must be stored somehow: this leads naturally onto questions of standardization, and I have made contributions to the relevant international standards - MPEG-A Part 10 (Visual Surveillance).
