Professor Peter Foot

Emeritus Professor

About

I studied chemistry at the Universities of Southampton and Oxford. Later, working at Brighton and Sussex Universities, I became interested in inorganic materials and organic polymers. Present interests are mainly in functional polymers and nanocomposites for energy conversion, organic optics & electronics and drug delivery.

I led the Materials Research Group at Kingston University (1995-2008) and was Founding Director of the Materials Research Centre. I retired as full-time Professor of Materials Science in 2014, and am now an Emeritus Professor.

I currently supervise 3 PhD. students at Kingston, having previously directed 56 successfully-completed research students and 9 postdoc researchers. My research has been funded by EPSRC, the Royal Society, industry and government agencies, including a recent KTP (2013-15) worth £130k from InnovateUK.

My current research interests are in:

  • Conducting polymers and polyblends (e.g. for sensors and actuators)
  • Organic and polymeric semiconductors and thin-film devices (OLED; FET)
  • Organic-inorganic nanocomposites, including photovoltaic (PV) properties and electronic energy transfer
  • High-energy battery materials (especially Li and Mg battery cathodes), and supercapacitors
  • Polymer nanoparticles for targeted delivery of potent or cardiotoxic drugs
  • Ophthalmic polymers (surface modification and novel polymer synthesis)

I have 100+ publications and 8 patents, some of which are listed on this web page. Other work has been subject to confidentiality restrictions, but will be published wherever possible.
