Studying at Kingston: Classes and exams

Timetables and registering for classes

We will give you your timetable (schedule) for the classes you have selected at the orientation programme. There will be drop-in sessions for students who need to finalise their classes (dates to be confirmed).

If you are taking music, business, law, engineering or computer information classes, you will not have a schedule until you have met with the relevant member of staff in that faculty. We will give you more information about these meetings at the orientation programme.

As there are often last minute changes to the timetable, we suggest that you check your schedule on My Kingston (our student intranet) before classes start. (Please note that you can only access My Kingston after you have enrolled.) There will then be time to sort out any scheduling problems that you have.

What if I want to drop or add a class?

Following the first day of classes, there will be a 'drop/add period' to allow you to finalise your timetable (schedule). The deadline for this will be confirmed closer to the start of term.

In order to drop or add classes, you must contact the European and Study Abroad Office either by email or in person.

What is the registration form for?

We will give you a registration form at the orientation programme, which you must complete and return once your classes are confirmed.

The registration form provides a final confirmation of the modules you are taking and the grades we need to collect. Without this form, we cannot set up your 'Certificate of Credits Earned' correctly and you will not get any grades or credits.

Attending classes

For most classes in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Business and Law, you will have a one-hour seminar in addition to lectures. Wherever possible, we will give you the details of the seminar groups that you have been assigned to.

The times of the seminars will also be displayed in the relevant faculties during the first week of the semester. You can enquire at the modular offices or check on My Kingston (our student intranet). Please note that you can only access My Kingston after you have enrolled.

  • Don't buy textbooks until you have asked the lecturer if it is required.
  • You must attend all hours shown on the timetable (schedule) – each class runs only once.
  • Please introduce yourself to each of your lecturers.

Exams

Our online class listing usually indicates whether the module is assessed 100% by coursework or not. However, it is important to check this in the module guide the University will give you in the first week of classes. If any problem arises, you must come to see the European and Study Abroad office to discuss your options immediately.

Grades and transferring credits

Your classes will hopefully have already been pre-approved by your home college. If not, we suggest contacting your academic advisor at home to get approval as soon as possible after you are sure they are not going to change.

We can usually email you a syllabus if needed so you can forward a copy to your advisor. Getting things sorted out now will save you time and effort later in the year. You should also keep all module guides and returned marked work to take back to your home college.

We will issue a 'Certificate of Credits Earned' at the end of your semester. (This confirms the classes taken, the credit hours and your grade, with an explanation of the grading system on the certificate.) We automatically send it to your home university once we have received all of your grades, usually in late August.

Please do not contact your lecturers directly for grades – they will be collected by the European and Study Abroad Office.
