Business studies courses

When choosing your business studies courses, you need to remember the following points:

Course location and length

Unlike the rest of the University, Business School classes (BA, BB, BH, BL, BM and BS courses) run for the whole academic year but meet less frequently each week, usually for one or two hours. Students take eight classes a year. These year-long classes run at the Kingston Hill campus.

The Business School also offers some classes to students minoring in Business (BU courses), which are semesterised. These semesterised classes run at the Penrhyn Road campus, three miles from the Business School. Students take four courses each semester.

The School of Economics (BE, EC and FE courses) is not part of the Business School so its classes are also semesterised and run at Penrhyn Road.

If you plan to take business courses, you should restrict your choice to those offered at a single campus. Moving between campuses and mixing year-long and semester-long classes makes scheduling almost impossible.

Course level

In the UK students do not take any General Education classes and therefore progress at a faster rate through their major – usually taking between six and eight courses in the major each year. Students must complete all the courses at a given level before moving to the next. Thus only Seniors, who will have already completed at least 14 courses in the business area and spent a year gaining relevant work experience, take level 3 courses.

We recommend that if you are a Junior, you take only level 1 and level 2 classes. If you are a Senior, we still believe that you should take mainly level 2 classes with no more than one or two level 3 classes, which will only be sanctioned after you have discussed your background with the Business School advisor on arrival.

Non-business courses

If you plan to take year-long courses in the Business School, you may take one non-business/general education class each semester, but this can only be confirmed on arrival after your Business School timetable has been finalised.
