Terms, Conditions & Restrictions
This Service Agreement is between the user and Information Services.
This service provides users with an internet connection that will allow access to email and the world wide web, for academic purposes. Users will not have access to workstation applications managed by Kingston University.
Once it has been established that a user's network port is 'live', this service will be unsupported. Any problems or issues related to the user's computer or system settings are not the responsibility of Kingston University and must be rectified by the user.
The University reserves the right to amend the service at any time. The University will endeavour to provide a fast and reliable service via our provider (Janet) but students should be aware that heavy usage may cause contention issues and slower access at busy times.
Users who are having difficulty connecting should contact the LRC Help desk on ext. 63355 or log a query via our website: http://www.kingston.ac.uk/advisory/enquiry.html
Please leave a phone number by which we may contact you, your room and site details and a description of the problem.
Users may not run certain services such as FTP/SFTP or web servers, SSH, peer-to peer (filesharing), webcams, or some messenger clients from their computers. Please be aware that access to certain ports and protocols has been restricted or blocked. The connection is intended primarily for academic use.
You MUST ensure that you install current and updated virus scanning software on your PC/Mac and keep the OS regularly updated to prevent propagation of viruses throughout the University. You can download free anti-virus software here: http://www.grisoft.com
Computers not running current anti-virus software and/or spreading viruses may be disconnected from the network without warning.
Students should not attempt to install any networking equipment*. This includes routers, hubs, switches and servers. These devices can have an adverse effect on the existing network and cause problems for other residents. Computers should be connected directly to the port via the supplied network cable. Any ports (connections in rooms) showing activity that is consistent with unauthorised network equipment will be disabled to protect the service. By installing an unauthorized device users will breach the ICT Security Policy Appendix E: - Acceptable Use Policy for the Halls of Residence Network Service sections 2 & 3. For further information please view the University IT Security Policy at the address below:- http://www.kingston.ac.uk/about_ku/structure/policies/ICT.pdf
The university will perform regular checks to ensure regulations are being adhered to. Any breach of regulations will result in disconnection and is subject to the University disciplinary procedures. In such an event the connection fee will not be reimbursed.
Users must have understood and agreed to the University regulations for the use of IT Facilities as laid out in our AUP (available from any LRC or here).
