Wireless connection:
These pages detail how to connect to our wireless network which is available in key areas of the university.
Please note that although the network is physically contained within KU, and you will need your normal username and password to log in, from a connection and security point of view users will be considered as logging in from outside of the university (see External Access section).
Connecting to our Wireless Network:
Please note that we CANNOT support students on their own equipment further than the advice offered in these guides. Please do not ask KU staff to look at your settings or configuration, or to advise changes to your equipment. The wireless system is supported only as far as ensuring that the system is fully functional. It is up to individuals to ensure that their systems are set up and configured correctly.
1) Connecting...
We have configured our wireless network to be as simple as possible for you to access. Each of our Wireless Access Points broadcasts an identical System Service Identifier (SSID) called KUWIFI. This constitutes a Roaming Network. This means you can roam between access points without having to re-establish connectivity.
Your wireless client may pick up more than one SSID in given location. Wireless does not obey physical boundaries so it is quite possible that an SSID could be associated with a Wireless Access Point belonging to the university, an external company or local houses. You should only connect to KUWIFI.
2) Logging On...
When you associate with a Wireless Access Point you must authenticate before you are allowed to access the university network. Open your web browser to access any web site. Our Wireless Gateway intercepts your request and re-directs you a login screen. Log in with your normal Kingston username and password.
Log in as a Registered User by entering your normal Kingston username and password.
Your login details are encrypted and transmitted over a secure wireless link.
