Hogsmill Action Group
Kingston University staff and student volunteers work with the local Hogsmill Action Group to help clean and manage the Hogsmill River, which begins as a chalk spring in Ewell, Surrey, before making its way through Kingston to the River Thames.
The Hogsmill River runs through the University’s art design and architecture campus, Knights Park, and also passes through Middle Mill student Halls of Residence.
Groups of volunteers are supported by KUSU Volunteer Bureau and Kingston University’s Biodiversity Officer, who help coordinate the activities with Royal Borough of Kingston councils Climate Change and Sustainable Travel Group Officer
‘River Clean-ups’ address litter problems, helping to maintain a healthy River, while the ‘Balsam Bash’ involves removing the invasive Balsam weed, which can choke the River banks when it begins to grow aggressively in spring. Both activities aim to improve the biodiversity of the Hogsmill and its banks, while engaging University staff and students with their local water environment, ensuring that the Hogsmill is a River we can enjoy with the local community.
