Transition Town Kingston

Transition Town Kingston aims to mobilise and facilitate community action in order to respond effectively and positively to climate change and peak oil. They aim to build our communities resilience to the inevitable energy shocks caused by peak oil and drastically reduce our carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change. They seek to do this by raising the town’s awareness of these issues, making links with existing community groups, and local government; forming groups to look at all the key areas of life (food, energy, transport, health, and economics); delivering practical projects and launching a community implemented “Energy Descent Action Plan”.

The group firmly believes that a future with less oil could be preferable to the present if we use the same amount of creativity and ingenuity we did going up the energy slope. That if we act now, together we can create a way of living that is significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than that of today.

Since TTK’s inception in April 2008, C-SCAIPE have been providing space for the group’s meetings, film screenings and discussions. C-SCAIPE’s Debating Chamber is ideally equipped for such gatherings and has become TTK’s main venue for public events.

TTK event at C-SCAIPE “We are very grateful to Kingston University for providing free meeting space for the group. It is an ideal setting. The round tables are perfect for group work and encouraging discussion”.

A number of Kingston University Staff are involved in the group, which now has over 270 members in total. Discussions between the Sustainability Hub and the group have taken place to explore possible joint research funding opportunities.

Kingston University is also taking part in preliminary discussions with a number of other Universities about becoming ‘Universities in and of Transition’.
