Sustainable Kingston Alumni... past students from faculties across the University are engaged in a wide variety of careers, projects and research contributing to a more sustainable way of life.

How just some of our past students are making a difference...

James McMeeken

James McMeeken, an Environmental Science graduate (2007) now works for the Energy Saving Trust, based in central London. After graduating he joined the company as a team assistant, supporting a team of consultants that provide advice to organisations’ fleet transport operations. He has since moved into a project management role within the team, as Fleet Data Analyst. He currently leads a project developing custom-built database software, designed to organise all the consultancy projects, calculate and analyse their fleet carbon footprints, and run other analysis based on data from fleet transport operations.

Laura Wellington

Laura Wellington, an Environmental Science graduate (2002) now works at City College Plymouth as a Sustainability Officer.  After graduating Laura worked at a research and conservation centre in Brazil, became an environmental business advisor for a consultancy based in Surrey, educated the general public in Cornwall about waste management, managed events for Organic South West (part of the Soil Association) and finally worked as a Environmental Business Mentor for Groundwork in Plymouth (www.southwest.groundwork.org.uk).

 

Simon de Pinna

Simon de Pinna was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Innovation and Entrepreneurship in 2006, which was invaluable in setting him on the path of running his own company and developing the skills and tools for growing a technology business. Simon has now set up a low-energy lighting consultancy in Kingston. He distributes a range of LED lamps and fittings and advises on the benefits of ultra-efficient lighting. He can also arrange Carbon Trust loans, where appropriate, so that local SMEs can invest in this highly sustainable and cost-effective green technology. Renata Rez

Renata Rez, an Environmental Management graduate (2009) and former Sustainability Team assistant now works with Kid Stop, a well-respected charity that diverts children’s goods from landfill and offers it with other support services to parents with young children, particularly those on low incomes, in Sutton and Merton. Bart Ricketts

Bart Ricketts is an Environmental Science graduate (2001) and ex Students' Union sabbatical officer. He now works in waste management and is also a Liberal Councillor for the Royal Borough of Kingston. He is also involved with Save the World Club who have worked on a 'Space for Waste' project in Kingston. More details about Bart's work are available at Save the World Club.


Holly Barry

Holly Berry a 2005 fashion graduate reuses and reclaims fabrics to turn into fabulous 'one off' fashionable garments and accessories. She is working on collections for boutiques across London. She has received support from LMB Recycling and has recently received a grant from UnLtd to help with her educational programme Reclaim Fashion to provide creative workshops for young people.


Green Works

Anne Clifford a Business School graduate (2004) worked with the charity Green Works who reclaim and recycle office furniture. Anne conducted her MBA dissertation on Green Works and her time as a volunteer and her marketing expertise contributed towards the charity. Anne now runs the marketing department of a small charity that helps refugees.


Change the World for a Fiver

Sandra Deeble graduated from Kingston Polytechnic in 1988 with a degree in Modern Arts and French. She is involved with promoting the book 'Change the World for A Fiver' published by We Are What We Do.

Antidote a small company of four Graphic Design graduates, Tim Ashton (Circa 1982), Chris Wigan (1996), Oliver Davies and Sarah Carr (both in 2003) have also been involved with We Are What We Do since its conception.

Jessica Lee's eco-friendly scarves

Jessica Kim Lee a part-time MA student in The Creative Economy and Film and TV Design co-founded with 3 other MA students at Kingston University a new Ethical brand selling eco-friendly scarves. The business concept was aimed to encourage to create something new out of somehing old being kinder to the environment. Jessica has now branched off developing Creative Swarm into an Eco-Friendly Life-Style and Natural Well-Being Brand for all to enjoy in social networking events held at Centre Point Tower. Around 4,000 students graduate from Kingston a year. A number of Kingston graduates take up full time employment in the local area. These include key sector workers such as teachers, nurses, midwives and radiographers.
