Over Five Tonnes of Student 'Stuff' Diverted from Landfill! (Summer 2008)
For the fourth consecutive year, the Sustainability Team, KUSCO and the Halls Managers worked jointly on the Halls donations. From 3rd June until 12th September, unwanted 'stuff' were collected from all five University halls of residence sites.
Main objectives:
- Divert perfectly re-usable waste from landfill
- Support local organisations and charities
- Raise awareness about 'how wasteful our lives can be'
It was incredible to see the diversity of items retrieved: cookware, clothing, shoes, bedding, suitcases, electronic equipment, food, furniture, toys, books...etc. And for the first time in four years of the scheme, the items were weighted...
5154.87kg !!!
1 tonne of this was only duvets and cushions.
Like previous years, items were collected in clearly marked waste containers, sorted and distributed to charities and organisations listed below:
Thames Outreach
Greyhound Association
Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness
and even some (lucky) local residents...
Indirect positive outcomes included:
- the reduction of Kingston University's environmental impact
- the reduction of costs of waste disposal
