This follows a leap in Kingston’s position in the universities national Green League table a few days earlier – zooming up from 46th to 15th place.
“Winning the award shows that the small actions of individuals and lobbying of ginger groups really can make a difference.” said Ros Taylor, Director of the Sustainability Hub at Kingston.

“It confirms the relevance and importance of our vision for a sustainable Kingston to everyone who has supported us.”

At the Green Gowns Gala Kingston University outlined the progress made in driving through sustainability initially launched and implemented with the help of individuals at grass roots level, and now supported by the University’s Executive, Governors, staff and students.

A group of academics, support staff, estates and facilities managers and student representatives formed the Steering Group for Sustainability in 2002 to bring a green ethos to all areas of working life at Kingston.
Real-world sustainability has been promoted through new courses, research and consultancy; has been embedded into curricular, campus management and governance; business and community links have been established and utilised. In 2009 the University established a Sustainability Hub to coordinate these activities more effectively from a core position.

The judges commented that Kingston’s submission was a strong story of institutional change that showed a wide range of sustainability activity. The judges were particularly impressed with how sustainability had permeated all areas at Kingston University.
