Professionalising Students - Green shoots and Real World Learning

SGS participants have recently gained small funding grants to support two new projects.  Both, in very different ways, aim to improve students’ real world learning and enhance their employability skills.

Mark Penson (Sociology and Film Studies) has won funding from FASS funds for enhancing employability skills for a participatory learning project. In ‘Green Shoots’ students will be learning the skills of documentary film making while exploring with participants their understanding of green issues. They will explore how public participants, relate to the green agenda to their daily lives and how, if at all, they would prioritise developing the sustainability in practice. A video diary and the final ‘broadcast’ will be available the share via the Sustainability Hub website.

For more information please contact Mark Penson: m.penson@kingston.ac.uk

A project team from the Sustainability Hub, Sustainability Team and the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment has won funding from the Higher Education Academy, to support the extension of work in a postgraduate module on Sustainable Environmental Management to students from Design, Built Environment and Law. This Kingston project was one of just 7 funded from 93 bids received. Students undertake real-world, real -time environmental audits for local SMEs and charities as part of their module studies. Thus they gain valuable employment skills and experience while the host companies gain a free audit. Ros Taylor with Colin Ryall (Geography, Geology and the Environment), Nicola Corrigan and Hannah Smith will be monitoring student performance, employer and student feedback and building a case study bank of materials to be shared within the HE sector. The HEA grant is just under £4K.
