Energy and carbon efficiency at Kingston University

Energy management

We are dedicated to reducing our energy use and resulting carbon emissions through a combination of low to zero carbon technology, building energy efficiency and behavioural change programmes. This will reduce our environmental impact as well as our £2.8 million energy bill, helping us meet our CO2 reduction target of 35% by 2020*.

Some of our carbon cutting projects include:

  • Replacing inefficient lighting: 1046t CO2 saved per annum – that's like driving an average car non-stop for 4.6 years.
  • Upgrading efficient motors and pumps for building heating systems: 509t CO2 saved per annum – that's the same as an average house produces in nearly 40 years.
  • Upgrading hand dryers: 50t CO2 saved per annum – the same amount that would be produced if you left on a low-energy lightbulb continuously for 439 years!
  • Updating boiler controls in halls of residence, with state-of-the-art wireless control technology: 169t CO2 saved per annum – the same as taking 45 return flights to Beijing out of the air.
