Accounting and Finance BA(Hons): What our students say

Student profiles

Don't just take our word for it – here's what some of our current and recent students say about what it's like to study at Kingston.

Course: Accounting and Finance BA(Hons)

"I thoroughly enjoyed the Accounting and Finance degree at Kingston, and found it was a good stepping stone to kick start my career. I have recently qualified as a professional accountant with the ACCA and do not think I would have continued within the profession was it not for the lecturers at the University. I found the course very inspiring and motivating."

Ka-Lam Lee

Name: Ka-Lam Lee
Course: Accounting and Finance BA(Hons)
Level: Third year

"The Kingston Accounting and Finance programme prepares students for the challenges in the accounting and finance sector. Not only do we get exam credits and exemptions from professional qualifications such as ACA, ACCA and CIMA, which are globally recognised, we also have the opportunity enhance our interview skills through 'speed meeting' with accounting firms and assessed presentations with individual feedback. Learning from lecturers who have real experiences in practice provides us with valuable insight into the evolving industry."

"I've always liked numerical problems and applied to study Business Management, which includes a module in accounts. However, I decided that what I enjoyed and wanted to do in the future was accounting and finance – luckily the tutors were really helpful so I was able to change course easily.

"The Accounting and Finance course consists of many different modules and so learning even the basics is quite satisfying. The lecturers are brilliant – their teaching styles are adapted differently for each subject and they are always willing to help and clarify matters of concern, which is wonderful.

"The modules are not just out of a textbook; they change with the real world. Some require you to look at current events in newspapers such as the Financial Times. The seminar classes are very interactive. This exposes you to different points of view on issues you wouldn't have thought of and I have enjoyed meeting a diverse range of people on the course. I also liked that we get speakers from outside companies talking about the opportunities they offer and how to apply for placements.

"Kingston has a great Students' Union consisting of a wide range of clubs and societies. I am an active member of the Hindu Society and have been attending Shotokan Karate Club classes since the first year. I have used this to gain relevant work experience by becoming the Karate Club's treasurer.

"Compared to college, university requires you to work a lot more independently. You're not spoon-fed by your lecturer and this pushes your ability to learn. There have been times when I struggled to understand concepts, but any problems were soon rectified when I asked the tutors who are always there for you and willing to help.

"I came to Kingston initially because I was told it had an excellent business school and a good pass rate as well as being in the top 30 list of universities. But it also has a lot to offer in terms of student life. The nightlife is great; there are two clubs and central London is not far. The Students' Union bars hold events such as quizzes with prizes (which I won once!) and the people of Kingston are very polite.

"After my degree I would like to take further professional exams, which my course will help me with, especially as it provides some exemptions. I've realised during this course that I really have a knack for numbers and this is what I'd like to pursue for my career.

"I am happy to say that I am a student at this University and wouldn't change any part of my experience here."

Name: Asif Bajwa
Course: Accounting and Finance BA(Hons)

Asif is a recent graduate of the Accounting and Finance BA(Hons) degree. He recently wrote an email to one of his former lecturers at Kingston.

"...I am writing this email just to thank you for all your support during the three years at University. It had a great time and am very thankful to you for helping me and teaching me about financial markets and corporate finance. Today at work I am still using many of the concepts referring back to the corporate finance and financial markets book."

Name: Peter Jordan
Course: Accounting and Finance BA(Hons)

"I studied Accounting and Finance at Kingston where I was exposed to a wide range of technical skills through lectures and informative tutorial sessions. The learning environment was excellent, with tutors always willing to assist and provide help whenever required.

"These skills gave me a solid grounding to study for my ACA qualification, which I achieved during employment with Roffe Swayne, an accounting practice in Surrey. Since then I have secured a position as asset management controller at Morgan Stanley, the international investment bank, where I will continue to build upon the knowledge developed at Kingston."
