Aircraft Engineering introductory year, foundation degree FdEng and top-up year BSc(Hons): What our students say
Student profiles
Don't just take our word for it – here's what some of our current and recent students say about what it's like to study at Kingston.
A student's view on why to choose Kingston:
"When I started looking into studying aircraft engineering, a friend who had already been to Kingston recommended the University.
"If you are considering aircraft engineering as a career, I would say this is one of the best places to study. There are people on my course who have come from other universities that they were fed up with, and they all say Kingston is the best."
A student's view on our teaching:
"My dad used to be in this field – he worked as an aircraft engineer so he introduced me to the subject when I was quite young. I was really interested in it and have wanted to study it ever since.
"The teaching here is really very good. We get on very well with the lecturers – they care about us and have an interest in their subject because they have worked as engineers for ages.
"We also do lots of practical work. If you are just sitting in a classroom all day long, you do learn, but it's not the same as getting to go out there and actually use your knowledge. It's much more interesting that way.
"I would like to become a maintenance engineer for a big airline where I could work on massive jumbo jets. I would love to work at an airport like Heathrow – somewhere busy with lots happening so that I could get some really good experience."
A student's view of career prospects:
"I am a practical person, so I wanted to do a course that was focused towards that kind of work.
"Ideally, I want to get a job at one of the big airports because the work is so varied. The big airports deal with all sorts of things. Every day is different – there's always going to be a new problem to solve."
A student view on our practical work:
"I originally wanted to be a pilot, but for various reasons I couldn't. This is the next best way of getting to work with aircraft.
"The practical side is what I enjoy the most – we get to spend time with aircraft and actually see what's going on in the hangars.
"Ultimately I would like to be an aircraft engineer, preferably working for a big company. Getting our Jar licences as part of the course means we also have the chance to work and travel in Europe so that is something else I'd like to do."
One student's route to Kingston University:
"I studied down at East Surrey College where I met a Kingston University lecturer. He told me about this course and I have since enrolled and am just coming to the end of my first year."
A mature student's perspective of the course:
"I was looking for something different to do so chose aircraft engineering. As a mature student, I was a bit concerned that I might be too old, but this hasn't been the case at all and I am thoroughly enjoying the course.
"We have got some excellent facilities and some excellent assistants over in the lab. They are very clever guys and they really know their subject."
A student's view of our academic support:
"If you want any help, you can go straight to the lecturer who will explain everything. You can go and ask them questions every time.
"Kingston is a good place for students, especially when it comes to socialising. There's everything from pubs to shopping centres."
