Automotive Engineering (Motorsport) MEng/BEng(Hons): Course features

What this course offers you

  • This course is ideal if you are interested in the design, test and development of vehicles and/or components from concept stage through to production. The motorsport pathway is ideal if you are interested in motorsport and would like to learn about the engineering involved.
  • This course combines theory with a lot of hands-on/practical applications. You gain:
    • a thorough technical understanding of the subject;
    • high-quality automotive engineering skills; and
    • an awareness of business and management issues.
  • You study, through a combination of lectures and practical laboratory work, subjects as:
    • engineering mathematics;
    • design and manufacture;
    • automotive systems;
    • vehicle aerodynamics and structural analysis; and
    • state-of-the-art regenerative and other green technologies
  • You will be using industry standard software (eg Siemens NX, ANSYS, SolidWorks) and obtain a thorough knowledge in:
    • computer aided design (CAD);
    • computer aided manufacturing (CAM);
    • computer aided engineering (CAE); and
    • computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • You will have full access to specialised software, such as:
    • AVL Boost (Virtual Engine Simulation Tool);
    • Lotus Engineering (engine design and test software from Lotus); and
    • MSC Adams (real dynamics for vehicle design and testing).
  • You will have full access and use specialised equipment such as:
    • a damper/suspension dynamometer;
    • a THEPRA vehicles dynamics control proline;
    • a rolling road for motorbikes; and
    • two wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing equipped with a laser Doppler anemometry system.
  • Specialised projects are offered on UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) and UGV (unmanned ground vehicles), such as the Mars rover robot.
  • We have good links with industry, including Formula-e, Lotus, Williams, Renault, BAR and HKS, which can help you gain an industrial work placement during your undergraduate study.
  • Guest speakers from:
    • Formula-e
    • Jagual Land Rover
    • IMechE South West Committee
  • You can become a member of our Formula Student team, participate in the design and manufacture of an electric single-seated race car and compete against other university student teams in the infamous IMechE Formula Student competition.
  • You can become a member of our TT bike team, participate in the design and manufacture of an electric TT bike and compete against other university and professional teams in the notorious Isle of Man race.
  • You can become a member of our Caterham team, participate in the setup of a Caterham race car and compete against other teams in the Caterham Academy Championship.
  • The course will provide you with the skills needed for the workplace, including:
    • communication;
    • self-management;
    • teamwork; and
    • leadership.
