Breast Imaging FdSc: Learning outcomes

What you will gain from this course

The learning outcomes for this course are to be able to:

  • competently and safely perform mammographic examinations for clients with a range of different physical attributes and needs, to the standard necessary to optimise diagnostic accuracy;
  • demonstrate understanding, application and responsibilities under current radiation legislation;
  • evaluate mammographic technique and diagnostic quality of images and be able to make recommendations to improve practice;
  • make informed judgements with regard to the operation of the x-ray imaging equipment and local mammographic quality control practices;
  • make informed judgements on aspects of the quality of care delivered by different professional groups working in local breast care services from the perspective of the women requesting or requiring the service;
  • review, reflect and report on the experiences of women who access the breast care services and make recommendations as to an appropriate course of action to improve practice;
  • appraise the knowledge, understanding and communication and interpersonal skills demonstrated by different professionals delivering the service and, where appropriate, compare and contrast these with your own ability to communicate effectively in the workplace with women and professional colleagues;
  • indicate the implications of legal and ethical boundaries for healthcare staff with associated individual responsibilities for lifelong learning and self improvement and supporting learning in the workplace;
  • analyse the role of health promotion and interpersonal awareness in breast screening;
  • evaluate the range of breast imaging modalities and perform supplementary breast mammography techniques required for breast diagnosis; and
  • make informed decisions relating to the changes impacting on the breast screening field.
