Business Management BSc(Hons) with business experience and choice of specialisms: Links with business and industry

Entrepreneurship in your degree

Innovation and entrepreneurship are now essential for both start-ups and corporations to drive revenue growth. Entrepreneurship and its thinking is emphasised throughout our business programmes and our Business Management BSc(Hons) degree includes modules on entrepreneurship, as well as the specialism in Entrepreneurship (current modules for this are Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in an International Context). Our degrees also include an integrated placement option and as part of this you can work for a funded start-up business or set up your own.

You will develop key practical, interpersonal, critical and creative thinking skills that will help you to create your own business or work as an innovation manager or internal entrepreneur within a larger enterprise. We deliver this option in a practical, supportive and vibrant student environment in collaboration with the Department for Strategy, Marketing & Innovation and the Kingston Enterprise Education Group. The group has strong links with industry for guest speakers, student projects and future employment opportunities.

  • Through our Entrepreneurship module, you will learn about the different aspects of entrepreneurship and business planning. You will develop the business plan for a new venture or the launch of an innovative new product or service. You will find out what it takes to develop a business plan - from idea generation, feasibility analysis and the marketing strategy - to the development of business models and financial analysis of the business plan.
  • Our Innovation module introduces you to the main concepts and management tools for innovation activities within organisations of all sizes. It presents the main instruments in support of innovation and entrepreneurship, such as business incubators, accelerators, crowdfunding platforms and venture capital finance. It also examines international, national and regional policy measures in stimulating the innovation ecosystem. Organisations with a strong, consistent and successful focus on managing innovation outperform their competitors in terms of growth and financial performance. Innovation management requires special knowledge and skills, which are different from standard strategic management theories and practices.
  • Our Entrepreneurship in an International Context module provides you with the opportunity to discover how to plan the expansion of a small entrepreneurial business into international markets. You will also gain experience of choosing modes of entry for small business internationalisation, assess international markets and produce financial projections for the business plan.

Entrepreneurship experience

Students taking the entrepreneurship experience placement will work in a funded start-up environment – either for an existing start-up company or your own venture. You will learn how to identify new entrepreneurial opportunities, develop them through iterative testing, and connect with real users to create market value and achieve competitive advantage. Applying critical and creative thinking towards business modelling and planning for your company, you will develop skills in marketing, pitching, operations, and business funding.  All students taking the entrepreneurship experience will participate in a one-week Entrepreneurs Boot Camp, attend entrepreneurial workshops throughout the term, and be coached by both industry and academic mentors.

  • For the sixth year, Kingston University has been rated the top UK higher education institution for graduate start-up companies (Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey) and has a strong track record of excellence in entrepreneurship.
  • Kingston Business School has also received the Small Business Charter from the Chartered Association of Business Schools, in recognition of our leadership, research and practical support in the area of entrepreneurship and small business.

Our Strategy into Practice seminar series gives you the opportunity to understand strategy in enterprises of all scales. Top managers will give you first-hand accounts of managing complex organisations in the UK and internationally, promoting innovation and creativity, instituting cultural change and managing growth. Speakers to date have included Lord Hastings (KPMG, BT and UNICEF), Karen Hamilton (Unilever), and Greg Dyke (former Director General of the BBC).

In each session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and network with academic staff and local business leaders. These seminars are also open to students, alumni, staff, the business community and the wider public.
